As Jordan marks its 79th Independence Day, the occasion comes at a time of mounting regional and domestic challenges. Widely seen as a pillar of stability in a turbulent region, the country has shown resilience in the face of ongoing pressures—from hosting millions of Syrian, Palestinians, Yemeni, Libyan, and Iraqi refugees, to grappling with resource scarcity, including severe water shortages and limited natural wealth.
Yet, amid these pressures, the late King Hussein’s enduring statement still resonates: “The human being is our greatest asset.” Nowhere is this more relevant than in the potential of Jordan’s youth.
Today, over 65% of the population is under the age of 30. This young demographic is relatively well-educated and eager to contribute, yet faces limited economic opportunities. Structural issues in the labor market, skill mismatches, and constrained private sector growth have all contributed to a sense of frustration and disconnection among many young Jordanians.
Tourism—once a key driver of growth—has been hit hard by regional instability. Compounding the situation, recent reductions in international aid, particularly USAID funding, have reportedly impacted up to 30,000 jobs and support services. Meanwhile, a growing number of Jordan’s best and brightest are leaving for more dynamic labor markets in the Gulf, particularly Saudi Arabia and the UAE, where investment in renewable energy, AI, and technology is creating exciting opportunities.
Jordan cannot afford to lose this generation. The country stands at a crossroads. While it boasts a relatively educated population, the ecosystem to support innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation remains fragmented. Public-private partnerships, alongside strategic investment in 21st-century skills and emerging sectors, will be essential to reverse the brain drain and catalyze inclusive growth.
Jordan has a historic opportunity to redefine itself not only as a haven of stability but also as a model of youth-driven renewal. Bold action—anchored in investment, education reform, and entrepreneurship—can unlock the country’s human capital and chart a new path forward.
On this Independence Day, the call is clear: empower the youth, invest in their future, and build a Jordan that thrives from within.
